How can I stabilize muddy ground using mud mats ?
Our mud control slabs are a fantastic solution for combating mud and protecting your horses' feet against hooves diseases.
However, we strongly advise against installing mud slabs in a paddock or pasture where the surface is covered in deep mud. The ground to be stabilized must be firm, smooth and levelled prior to installing the grids. Like for installing hard floor tiles in your house, stabilization grids, being a flat solid material, they must lay on a flat, even and level surface. Otherwise, the tiles won’t interlock properly to one another and might move around over time.
To ensure that your installation remains durable and resistant, and that you and your horses take maximum advantage of their incredible capabilities, all year round whatever the weather, we recommend that you follow our installation recommendations (see product page).
We always recommend preparing the surface to be stabilized beforehand. For a qualitative installation, simply follow the steps below:
- Scrape and level the ground with the material in place and remove any stones, pebbles or other rough edges. The surface for the tiles should be as smooth as possible.
- Install the slabs so that they are firmly anchored to the ground. The grids must lay on the ground at all points. After being installed, it is recommended to let the grids rest for a few days before letting the horses run on them. This will give the tiles time to become firmly anchored to the ground. This will prevent unevenness underneath your surface, which will be strengthened as a result.
- For an optimum finish, you can add a layer of washed sand. A 0 - 3/16” type River sand or silica sand free of fines are also very good alternatives. In any case, make sure to use a draining material that is non-abrasive for horses' hooves. This will increase grip for your boarders and protect the mud control mats.
If you wish, a geotextile can be laid under the slabs. This will prevent mud from rising up.
Do not lay your slabs on a soft soil when the temperature is below 40°F, as the slabs will not anchor properly!
